Resource Utilization

Resource utilization is the measure of how effectively an organization is using its team resources over a particular period of time.

High resource utilization is ideal as it indicates that an organization is efficiently using its resources to meet demand. On the other hand, low resource utilization may suggest that team resources are being underutilized, which can lead to a lot of inefficiencies within the organization.

There are a number of factors that can impact resource utilization, including the level of demand for the organization's products or services, the efficiency of its processes, and the availability of resources.

Resource utilization is a KPI that measures performance and effort over an amount of available time (or capacity). Optimal resource utilization allows project managers to foresee resource availability across multiple categories.

Best practices:

  • Identify and prioritize high-value projects: ensure that team resources are being used effectively by focusing on the projects that have the greatest impact on the company's goals.
  • Monitor and track resource utilization: Regularly monitor and track resource utilization to identify bottlenecks in the process or areas where resources are being underutilized.

Use technology and tools to optimize resource utilization: Technologies such as data analytics and project management tools can help you better understand how resources are being used and identify opportunities for improvement. Rocketlane’s resource management solution can help with this.
